Kindergarten Work:

PHONICS

• Review all 70 phonograms using the cards or the SWR app. Make a list of the phonograms your child has not mastered yet, and review those more frequently.

• If time permits, then you say the sound (using cards or the app) and have your child write the cursive letter(s) for that sound. A phonogram writing page was sent home in the packet, where you say the sound and your child writes the letter(s). If your child is unclear on which letter to write, then show the written letter, but first try to have them write the letter(s) without seeing it in print.  (phonogram writing #2)

• Please contact Mrs. Eddy if you would like to purchase a set of phonogram cards.

MATH

• Have your child do the +1 and +2 math flash cards. If your child can do the +1s and +2s in a minute or less, then move on to the +3s. Please make your child a set of -1 flashcards (from 1 through 12). After your child can do the -1 flashcards in one minute or less, then work on the -2 flashcards.

• Complete two pages of Math per day (front and back). Concerning the Math homework, please go over the concept with your child for each page and have your child correct anything that is incorrect (especially numbers that are written backwards). This is a new unit on money, so please go over the names of each coin (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half-dollar) and their worth. Each day have your child practice counting and adding real coins.

• Before starting first grade, I would like the students to count orally and write the numbers forwards and backwards 0-100 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. We practiced this at school, so an occasional review at home would be great. A number chart was sent home in the packet to keep at home. First, have your child count by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s using the number line and then try orally and written without looking at the number line.

• Using the number line, another exercise to ensure number knowledge and order is you pick any number between 1-100 and ask your child to tell you “one more” and “one less”. Then go on to “two more” and “two less” from any number you pick. Again, start with using the number chart, and then eventually do the exercise without looking at the number chart.

RELIGION

• In the Saint Booklet, read one page each day and have your child color that page. Each day, review all the previous saints and have your child tell you one fact about that saint.

• The prayers I would like the children to know before going to first grade are the Lord’s Prayer (the Our Father), Angelic Salutation (The Hail Mary), Angel of God, Act of Contrition, Act of Faith, Act of Hope, and Act of Charity. We covered these prayers and their meaning at school. The students will need some continued help with the Act of Contrition, Faith, Hope, and Charity. When your child is saying the prayers, check if they are saying the words correctly and clearly. They might be used to saying the prayers with the family, but may not know all the words when they say them individually.

Acts of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Contrition

READING, VOCABULARY, COMPOSITION, LITERATURE

• Twenty minutes of reading from the green or red reader daily would be great! Please contact Mrs. Ballard if you have not checked out a reader to use at home. When your child is reading the word lists and stories, which coincide with the phonograms the students have learned at school, have your child sound out each word one or two times, and then read the words again without sounding out.

• For vocabulary enrichment, explain the meaning of unfamiliar words in the word lists.

• For every 5-10 words read, have your child compose an original, oral sentence (“who doing what”, not just a phrase and try to avoid the word “like” which is how many want to start their sentences).

• When reading to your child, ask your child to retell the main events of the story, what happened in the beginning, middle, and at the end, who were the main characters, and what was the setting of the story.

CURSIVE

• Complete one page of cursive per day. Have your child correct any letters that are not correct.

Cursive First - Capital and Small Cursive letter with Numerals

OPTIONAL

• History/Geography: continue to work on the Colorado unit and return to school to add to your child’s History Book.  Also, read about Our Lady of Fatima, color, and return.

• Poetry: He Has Risen     Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue     A Child's Wish

The poems were sent home in the homework packet. Please have your child read the poem a few times and color the picture. Please explain any words your child may not know the meaning of. Memorizing the poem is optional. I love receiving videos through the Marco Polo app of poem recitations! When you are finished with the poem, you can return it and I will add the poem to your child’s Poetry Books, which you will receive at the end of the year.

• Science: Read with your child (several times) the concepts on Plants until your child can read it partially on their own.

On May 11th, the plant packet will be sent home.  Your child may circle all the roots, put an X on the stems, and color the pictures of the flowers and plants.

Return the finished packet to school so I can add it to their Science Book, which will be going home at the end of the year. Look up the colors of plants and trees if needed.
