By Monday, March 23rd - Write a poetry critique on one of the five poems chosen during our class last Friday.
As we discussed in class, you should start your critique by explaining the general theme of the poem before digging deeper. Examine the poet’s choice of words. Poets choose words very carefully. What literary techniques did the poet use to express his ideas? What is the rhyme scheme, etc. Good luck!
By Friday, March 27th -
Write a short story about the topic of your choice.
Use at least twenty of the literary techniques you have learned so far. You must clearly mark the use of each literary technique by inserting a footnote or by identifying the technique in parentheses [ex. “The Knight fought like a raging lion.” (Simile)]
I will also be sending home a new Literature work. As soon as you have received
a copy of the work, I will be assigning a fixed number of pages each week.
There will be no new assignments for next week (March 30th - April 3rd).
Please continue reading the material passed out this week, especially in Literature.
No new assignments for this week. If you haven’t already turned in your “20 Literature Terms/Techniques Essay”, please turn it in on Monday, April 6th, 2020.
Description
Write a short story about the topic of your choice. Use at least twenty of the literary techniques you have learned so far. You must clearly mark the use of each literary technique by inserting a footnote or merely a number in parentheses [ex. “The Knight fought like a raging lion.” (Simile)]
Don't forget that the 3rd quarter ended on March 27th. If for some reason you were unable to turn in an assignment during the drop off on Friday, March 27th, please send in the assignment via email or contact Mr. Cichos to arrange a time when he can meet you at the lower school.
Assignments for April 20th - 24th
No assignments this week. We will finish discussing Markheim and start our discussion of Geoffrey Chaucer. Our first assignment will be given out next week.
Assignments for April 27th - May 1st
Please write a short essay on Markheim. Here is some food for thought!
What message was Robert Louis Stevenson trying to convey?
Who was the strange visitor?
Why all the clocks?
Why all the mirrors?
Why didn't Markheim want to look in the mirrors?
Why did Markheim always make excuses for himself?
Why do sins always look less heinous when we commit them ourselves?
Why are we always more apt to see the faults of others?
Why does Robert Louis Stevenson included flashbacks from Markheim's past?
Why does Markheim eventually turn himself in?
What literary tools does Stevenson use to convey his message?
You can focus on some of these topics or chose some topics of your own. There is no need to make the essay long. I would actually prefer if you kept it shorter. It is quality and not quantity that we are after.
The essay will be due on Monday, May 4th.
Assignments for May 4th - 8th
If you didn't turn in your essay on Markheim, make sure you turn it in as soon as possible.
If you received a copy of Song at the Scaffold in your box, please read it and return it by Monday, May 11th, so we can pass the book along to other students.
Assignments for May 11th - 15th
Please complete the "Literary Terms Test" and drop it off at the Homework Exchange next Monday.
