By Monday, March 23rd- “To Expand or Not to Expand, That is the Question.”
Emperor Trajan was continually at war, expanding the Roman Empire in every direction. No doubt, Trajan would have argued that the “best defense is a good offense.” On the other hand, Emperor Hadrian, Trajan’s good friend and successor, almost immediately limited expansion and focused his energies on restricting the limits of the empire. Which Emperor chose correctly?
Write an essay examining his question. You must use at least ten historical facts to support your opinion (supposition). Clearly mark each historical fact by inserting a footnote or merely a number in parentheses (ex. Hadrian struggled finding Italian recruits (5)
By Friday, March 27th- “From the Punic Wars to Hadrian - A Time of
Conquest and Change.”
During the period from the end of the Punic Wars to the reign of Hadrian, Rome became the most powerful nation in the world. What social, political, psychological, and military changes were occurring within the Roman world during this period? Was Brutus right after all? Should have the Romans fought to protect their Republican roots? Can an empire be ruled by a republic which is no longer living up to the high moral standards of their ancestors? Was the shift to Empire inevitable?
Write an essay examining these questions. You must use at least fifteen historical facts to support your opinion (supposition). Clearly mark each historical fact by inserting a footnote or merely a number in parentheses (ex. In the last days of the Republic, the Senators did very little to keep men such as Caesar and Pompey from undermining the Republic by forming a Triumvirate, hinting that some Senators might have been more concerned with popularity and wealth than the welfare of the people (5).
