Assignments (3/30-4/1) – DUE Monday, April 6th
Sentence analysis assignment:
Analyze/chart/diagram the following sentences each on a separate piece of loose-leaf paper. Parse the words listed with each sentence and answer the thought question completely. It is not necessary to write the question but make sure you answer the question completely in well-written sentences.
1. When the wind is blowing, a man
who ventures onto the frozen void is pushed backwards by the hands of an
invisible enemy.
PARSE: who, void, is pushed, backwards
THOUGHT QUESTION: What is meant by “hands of an invisible enemy”? How do these words affect the tone?
2. Our Empire beyond the seas will
carry on the struggle until the New World with its power and might, steps forth
to the rescue.
PARSE: struggle,
until, forth

1. Analyze and diagram:
The young King looked about him and beheld peace and
amity among all these noble lords where, aforetime, had been discord and
ill-regard.*
*discord and ill-regard are subjects of the verb “had been”
2. Parse: young, lords, and aforetime
3. Give a synonym and the principal parts of the verb beheld.
4. Tell in a few sentences what may have changed the “discord and ill-regard”
of Arthur’s knights into “peace and amity.”

4. Explain the tone of this sentence in 2-3 well-written sentences.

Analyze the following sentences on this paper (no charts or diagrams). Review your notes on verbals.
Use PENCIL - circle verbals and write PART, INF, GER above them.

1. A Moorish house in the midst of a garden, now trampled
and destroyed, was the place that the Provencal knight led the English Prince.
2. In the midst of the room lay a coffin, covered with the banner.
